Tourist
information
Vicolo
della Penitenza, where the flat is situated, offers an enviable
position to the visitor who wants to enjoy Rome at its best. It is a
stone’s throw from Rome's Tiber river, and the narrow, bustling
streets and squares are its immediate backdrop. Trastevere's ancient
churches and illustrious memories are there to be explored. Its
countless restaurants and nightspots for all tastes and budgets wait
to be discovered in the labyrinth formed by the age-old alleys.
For
a quick "taste" of the Eternal City it’s enough to step
outside the door of the flat. A five-minute stroll leads you to the
splendid sixteenth century Villa della Farnesina in Via della
Lungara, rich in Renaissance masterpieces. Opposite is the
Corsini Palace with its extraordinary picture-gallery. A
romantic walk under the plane trees of
the Lungotevere (the riverside) with its magical bridges
provides a wonderful and changing view of the City or if you prefer
exotic plants there are the Botanical Gardens with original plants
from all over the world.
If
this tempts you to explore a little further afield a short walk
along the Lungotevere will lead you to St. Peter's, the Vatican
Museums and the Sistine Chapel. There you will also find Sant'Angelo
Castle, Emperor Hadrian's mausoleum which was for centuries an
impregnable fortress of the Popes. Alternatively you can walk up the
Gianicolo, the eighth hill rich in memories of Garibaldi where you'll
find the small temple of San Pietro in Montorio, 16th
century works of Bramante and an incomparable view of the whole of
Rome. Not far from here are the typical Italian gardens of Villa
Sciarra and the huge park of Villa Pamphilj.
By
crossing the recently restored 16th century Sisto Bridge,
you'll find yourselves on the other side of the Tiber in the
Renaissance and Baroque centre. There you can see Farnese Square
with the most beautiful palace by Michelangelo; Campo de' Fiori with
its old market; the very elegant Via Giulia; and Piazza Navona with
Bernini's spectacular Fountain of the Rivers (17th
century). From there, either walking or taking a bus or even renting
a bicycle or moped, you can visit the city of the Caesars and the
Popes, of the greatest dialect poets such as G.G.Belli and of the
masters of cinema such as Fellini. In short, you'll have the
priceless experience to plunge into 28 centuries of history and art,
of religious spirit and irreverence, of plebeian spirit and high
culture.
Private
cars are not allowed in the historical centre without a special
licence. However, Trastevere is well connected to other parts of the
City by public transport. There are numerous buses on the
Lungotevere
and a tram which takes you from Piazza Sonnino (Trastevere)
to Largo di Torre Argentina (full centre), and of course a fun and
pleasant alternative is to rent a bicycle or moped which you can
find in several places. But if you are really feeling tired after
your sightseeing you'll always find a taxi at Piazza Sonnino ready
to take you anywhere you want.
